Valepine Business Capital, a small-business funding broker in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, offers this used equipment loan calculator. Enter a machine's price, your down payment, an assumed rate and a term to see the monthly payment and the total cost including the down payment. Results are arithmetic, not offers; lending partners set actual terms.
What the calculator does
- Inputs: equipment price, down payment, annual rate and term in months
- Outputs: monthly payment, and total cost including the down payment
The rate is your assumption. Try two or three to see how sensitive the payment is; a partner's offer may differ from all of them.
What it does not do
Used equipment deals have features the calculator cannot model. Work through these by hand:
- Appraisal or inspection: some partners value used machines below the asking price and finance only part of the gap. If so, the down payment you need rises.
- Age and hours limits: partners often limit the age of equipment at the end of the term, which can shorten the term you can get.
- Charges at funding: any documentation or other charges in the agreement are not included; add them to the total yourself.
- Lease options: the calculator models a purchase, not a lease buyout.
Reading the total cost
Total cost here is the down payment plus every monthly payment. Compare it with the price: the difference is the financing cost under your assumptions. If shortening the term by a year raises the payment only slightly but lowers the total noticeably, that is worth knowing before a partner calls.
A useful by-hand check: multiply the machine's expected years of use by the hours it will run each year. If the financing term runs longer than the machine's useful life, the term is too long.
